About
David Malcolm’s professional evolution includes an enviable real estate career, significant public and community service, and philanthropy with an emphasis on education. He has more than 50 years’ experience in real estate. During that time, he personally handled sales, acquisitions and loan negotiations in excess of $4 billion. At one point, he had exclusive rights to Rally’s hamburgers in San Diego, Orange and Los Angeles counties with 40 locations and more than 1,000 employees. Today, he is President of Cal West Apartments, a trusted provider of quality rental housing in San Diego and South Riverside counties. David’s public service includes serving as a City of Chula Vista Councilmember for 10 years, the longest-tenured member of the California Coastal Commission (12 years), a Port of San Diego Commissioner and a charter member of the California Judicial Performance Commission created through a state ballot measure. He has served on numerous public company Boards of Directors and served his community on the Boards of Directors of the American Cancer Society San Diego, Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate at San Diego State University, San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, Scripps Institution of Oceanography and South Bay Family YMCA. He has a keen focus on helping the homeless reenter society having served on the St. Vincent de Paul Management (a subsidiary of Father Joe’s Villages) Board for 32 years. His philanthropy comes from a passion for sharing his success with a focus on education. He has supported the San Diego Foundation’s Community Scholars Initiative, been on the Board of the San Diego Christian College and established the David Malcolm Scholarship to assist outstanding students who have overcome personal challenges. He and his wife Annie have two grown sons and live in La Jolla.
